Homemade Hand Sanitizer With Essential Oils

If you are like me, you’re not a fan of commercial hand sanitizers. I don’t like the dried out feeling it leaves on my hands as well as the strong scent of alcohol. I have even gotten away from using antibacterial soap and strong cleaners at home too. Since discovering essential oils, I started making my homemade hand sanitizer and household cleaners, so I am in control with what my family is being exposed to when it comes to chemicals. It just makes more sense, and I can save hundreds of dollars every year.

Confessions of a Recovering Germaphobe

Since having four kids and witnessing illnesses move through the household like a hovering invisible cloud of darkness, I will admit, I was a bit paranoid (please don’t ask how bad it was). Okay, my home had become like a hospital ward with my obsessive cleaning and Lysol wipes in hand. I even purchased a UV light air filter to kill microbial germs with a guarantee of killing 99.9% of germs.

Of course, with time and trust in my ever-increasing knowledge of essential oils, I did discover I could take a gentler approach and make homemade cleaning products and personal care products such as the one I want to share with you today. This hand sanitizer recipe is a good one to have on hand when washing hands with good old soap and water aren’t available.

Give Essential Oils a Chance!

Most soaps and household cleaners sold commercially all claim to be antibacterial. But, it’s not only the bacteria we need to be worried about. It’s viruses too. We need a product that can help us stay healthy without harsh chemicals. Of course, handwashing is the best option for cleaning your hands; but it doesn’t hurt to keep a bottle of your homemade hand sanitizer by the sink and use after washing hands when you want that extra boost of protection, such as after handling uncooked meat or changing a diaper. I like to carry a small bottle of my homemade hand sanitizer in my purse when I need it and keep an extra bottle in the glove box in the car for those times when hand washing is not possible. My boys like to keep theirs on a keychain.

Depending on the oils you choose to use, it can serve multiple purposes as a gel for cuts, burns, etc.

Here’s an easy recipe for making homemade hand sanitizer with essential oils. This hand sanitizer doesn’t dry out your skin like store-bought products that contain alcohol. Instead, the essential oils used in this formula will keep your skin feeling soft. It is great to use on little one’s hands and will work to keep your family healthy from the cold and flu this spring.

What You Will Need:

2 drop Cassia essential oil
2 drop Clove essential oil
2 drop Rosemary essential oil
2 drop Eucalyptus essential oil
5 drops Lemon essential oil
1/2 teaspoon Unscented Aloe Vera Gel (for thicker hand sanitizer, add up to 1/4 cup)
Small Glass Bowl
Small travel-size bottle or container
1 ounce Water (or colloidal silver if you want more antibacterial action)

What To Do:

1. In a small glass bowl, place two drops of each of the following essential oils: cassia, clove, rosemary, and eucalyptus. If cassia essential oil is unavailable, you may substitute cinnamon essential oil.

2. Add five drops of lemon essential oil. Mix in a 1/2 teaspoon of unscented aloe vera gel (available at pharmacies and health food stores). If you prefer your hand gel to be thicker, add more aloe vera gel up to a 1/4 cup. Add water or colloidal silver until you reach the consistency you like.

3. Replace cap and shake well to mix. Store in an airtight plastic container or a small travel-size bottle until ready for use.
