How to Use Essential Oils on Pets? 

Dilution of essential oils is critical in dealing with pets! Essential oils must be diluted before use whether through inhalation or applied topically. While it depends on the essential oil used and for what issue you are wanting to address, various carrier oils can be used for dilution when using essential oils. 

In general, 1% dilution is recommended for emotional issues and 2-3% dilution for physical issues in dogs.

Hydrosols are effective and can help to mellow out your dog for emotional needs. The best application for hydrosols include sprays and through inhalation. 

  • Hydrosols are very safe for dogs (and puppies.) You can even add to drinking water when needed. 
  • Emotional issues may arise; it would be worthwhile to add 10 drops of hydrosol to drinking water. For emotional issues, add up to 1 teaspoon to drinking water. 
  • Trauma: 1-3 drops of hydrosol applied directly to the tongue could be used if the dog agrees with it. But never force them to take if they do not like it.

When Do I Use Essential Oils for My Dog 

A couple of things to keep in mind is how potent the oils are, so always dilute the essential oils before any use, whether topically or inhalation.

Arthritis is a big issue in older dogs that causes inflammation and degeneration in one or more joints. Ingredients

  • 4 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Chamomile Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Myrrh Essential Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba oil
  • Water
  • 1 ounce Spray Bottle

Instructions

  1. In a small glass bowl, add essential oils and carrier oils along with water. 
  2. Remove spray top and add essential oils, carrier oil, and water.
  3. Replace cap and shake to blend.

Notes

To use, spray onto the dog’s coat behind the neck area & other effected areas and be careful not to get into the dog’s eyes.
