What is Stress?

With an ever-growing society, levels of stress have been on the rise with the newest of generations feeling more and more stress. Adults are found to be more likely to find family responsibilities stressful than they have in the past. Family responsibilities, health concerns, health concerns affecting the family, and the economy are all factors that contribute to the average adult’s stress.

Stress can contribute adverse effects to your body if left unchecked, as it is common to think it is some illness when dealing with insomnia or upset stomach, but in fact, it is stress itself causing it all.


What Causes Stress?

Stress is a natural response to danger that may arise from certain situations. Commonly referred to as “fight or flight” mode when the body feels it has been threatened and needs to protect itself. When faced with these situations the body will flood the systems with hormones to up the effectiveness of certain functions to aid the “fight or flight” mode.

Hormones that are released into the body are cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. These chemicals trigger an increased heart rate, alertness, superior muscle readiness, and sweating. All these functions improve the chances of survival when faced with a hazardous or challenging situation.


How Essential Oils Help Stress

Adding essential oils for stress and natural solutions such as aromatherapy and techniques of relaxation into your life can have amazing effects on the livelihood of the future. Aromatherapy and essential oils help improve your calmness of the body, as at the end of various situations at the end of the day can leave one very wound-up and uncomfortable to rest or focus.

Essential oils can be used for relief of the day, by using them through aromatic baths and massages. Inhalation of certain essential oils is quite favorable to relaxation.

People with excessive stress will find that essential oils with calming and soothing properties are among the best for tranquility in dealing with the wave of stress.


Symptoms and Effects of Stress

Stress symptoms can be often overlooked as some illness but in fact, are not. Stress can affect your mind, body and even behavior.

  • Muscle tension or pain

Essential Oils for Stress

Cedarwood – Cedarwood oil is considered a natural sedative and can help to reduce restlessness and anxiety. Cedarwood has a high content of sesquiterpenes; these aids to promote relaxation, which can help a good night’s sleep to avoid fatigue, which is a common side effect of stress. Studies have proven that cedarwood is an excellent choice in improving one’s night sleep with the help of the chemical called cedrol found in cedarwood that helps promote sleep by boosting parasympathetic activity and its capability to increase serotonin production.

Another study done on rats with hyperactivity showed cedarwood oil to have sedative properties and calmed the rats and helped sleeping rates in the rats.

Frankincense – Frankincense has been renowned for its ability to eliminate germs and to clean wounds to prevent infections with its antiseptic attributes. This oil is also known for being sedative that helps with reducing stress, anxiety, or even anger.

Frankincense has also been studied to show that it has anxiolytic properties that allow help to reduce anxiety and stress.

Also backed up by another study done on animals, frankincense was again showed to have anxiolytic properties.

Bergamot – Bergamot is similar to lavender in its regards to its relaxing properties to help reduce stress and anxiety. However, studies on bergamot’s capability to combat stress and anxiety are quite limited. However, studies prove bergamot’s strength in relaxing with its aroma, as shown in a 2017 study when used in a mental health treatment center’s waiting room.

Bergamot also helps to level out emotions, discard negative emotions, fatigue, and even reduce saliva cortisol (cortisol is a hormone that is associated with stress) shown in a study that was published in 2015.

Geranium – Geranium is excellent to help improve the emotional aspect of life and uplift mood. Research that was published in 2015 showed geranium to reduce anxiety within pregnant woman during labor. The study was done on 100 women showed how geranium was effective at relieving stress during pregnancy and reducing diastolic blood pressure after the inhalation of geranium essential oil.

Lavender – Lavender essential oil is an excellent choice for its ability to help relax the body and help reduce insomnia caused by anxiety and stress. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine was testing a memory test with the aroma of lavender to see how participants performed the analysis while stressed. Those who inhaled lavender performed superior to those who inhaled a placebo aroma.

Research published in 2013 has shown that a 3% lavender oil spray on clothes reduced work-related stress for three to four days, this proves how powerful lavender is to relieve stress even with just 3% of the actual oil being used.

Lavender has been shown in a study to help ease anxiety and stress-related disorders (ex. PTSD) and help relax the brain.

Lavender, with its calming properties, is useful for stress when dealing with various situations ranging from traveling within an airport going from one gate to another or working in a stressful environment. Lavender will always be there to calm you when you need it the most.

Lemon – Lemon essential oil is from the lemon plant known for its use in cleaning products all over the world because of its incredible disinfectant properties and also used for its uplifting and energizing properties. Lemon also possesses a chemical called linalool, which is known to help stress, boost sleep, and even antidepressant properties.

Lemon also possesses antidepressant-like and anxiolytic properties that are known to reduce anxiety and stress within the body, as shown in a study published in 2006, showing the effects of lemon oil in mice.

Stress Alleviation Recipe for Headaches/Migraines

This recipe is useful for when you are overwhelmed with work and get a headache along the way. Inhale these oils and get quick relief! Bath Salts Soak | Aroma Hut Institute

What You Need:

½ cup Fine Sea Salts (Dead Sea Salts, Himalayan Pink Salts, Epsom Salts, or a combination of these)
15 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
3 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil
8 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops of Geranium Essential Oil
1-ounce plastic tub

What to Do:

  1. In a small bowl, add your salts and a carrier oil, if desired. Add essential oils then mix well using a wooden spoon.
  2. Add salt mixture to a small plastic tub and keep the container lid tight.
  3. To use, add salts to a running bath and swish around to dissolve in bathwater. Soak for 15 minutes.


Overwhelmingly Good Stress Inhaler Blend for On-The-Go

Being overwhelmed can happen quickly and can happen anywhere at any time. Bring this inhaler along with you to stop that feeling!

What You Need:

5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
10 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil
4 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil
Small Glass Bowl
Personal Inhaler

What to Do:

  1. In a small glass bowl, add essential oils. You may add, depending on your preference (up to fifteen drops).
  2. Remove the cover (bottom) of the inhaler to remove the cotton wick of the inhaler.
  3. Drop cotton wick into the bowl to soak up the essential oils.
  4. Using tweezers, drop the wick back into the inhaler. Replace cover and press down hard to insert into place.
  5. Use as needed for when the feeling of stress comes over you and gently inhaling for 5 or 6 times until the feeling goes away.


Essential Stress Diffuser Blend for Tranquil Relaxation and Mental Clarity

After a long day of work, inhaling some of these fine oils can help the brain to relax and the body to take it easy.

What You Need:

20 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil
25 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil
15 drops of Geranium Essential Oil
Small Glass Bowl
15ml dark glass container

What to Do:

  1. Blend essential oils in a small glass bowl.
  2. Pour essential oils into a glass container.
  3. To use, add 10-15 drops into a diffuser and let the diffuser run.

Note: You can also add 10 drops of Cedarwood oil to this recipe to make the ultimate relaxing tranquility blend.


Emotional Stress Massage Blend

Dealing with people can be hard and gets the emotions all wind up. Use this massage blend and get that emotional relief you deserve!

What You Need:

25 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops of Geranium Essential Oil
2-ounce Coconut fractionated Carrier Oil
2-ounce Squeeze-top bottle or Container

What to Do:

  1. In a plastic bottle or container, add essential oils and carrier oil.
  2. Replace cap and shake well to blend.
  3. To use, apply a small amount (about a teaspoon) into your palm and massage gently onto your back. Use as needed.

Note: You can also make diffuser blends to help reduce stress just by inhalation of the oils to help calm down the body after a long day.
