What a Pain!

Pain is a feeling that the body uses as a sign to say something is amiss in a particular area. Pain can be described as stabbing, aching, pinching, steady, to name a few. Some pain can be annoying, much like a headache, but other pain can be crippling to daily life.

Pain also brings a plethora of other symptoms, which are drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, and even nausea. In addition to physical symptoms, it also brings emotional effects such as anger, mood swings, irritability, and depression. Pain effects daily life and has profound impacts on relationships, job, and independence.

Pain is categorized as chronic or acute pain. Acute commonly is less in strength and short-term and happens when the body is injured, and then the pain is triggered. Chronic pain can be mild or severe, lasts longer, and maybe a consequence of a disease and can require more treatment.

What Causes Pain?

Pain is when nerves encounter injured tissues that send signals to the brain along the spinal cord. The nerves that carry the messages are called nociceptors.

The brain controls the action of what to do after the signal is received. For example, when a hot object or surface has touched a message through the spinal cord will cause the prompt contraction of muscles to prevent further damage to tissues within the skin. This reaction happens so fast that it occurs before the signal can reach the brain, and then the pain is felt afterward.

How the brain enacts pain varies from person to person with how the nociceptor and the brain interpret the pain. The mind can also release chemicals, for instance, dopamine, that counters the undesirable pain effects.

A study shows that the costs of the effects pain places in the United States were between $560 and $635 billion in missed days of work, lost wages, and treatment costs.
