Essential oils for emotions can have a positive impact on one’s mood. This is good news for those who suffer from depression. Studies have shown that the number one cause for depression is the lack of oxygen around the pineal and pituitary glands and that some essential oils can dramatically increase oxygenation and activity in the brain. They have also discovered that with careful application of essential oils to the soles of the feet, it enables the oil to reach every cell in the body within 20 minutes.

When essential oils are diffused in the air, the oils reach the brain by means of the olfactory system. The olfactory membranes, with almost 800 million nerve endings receive the micro-fine, vaporized oil particles and carry them along the axon of the nerve fibers, connecting them with the secondary neurons in the olfactory bulb. The impulses are then transported to the limbic system and the olfactory sensory center at the base of the brain. They then pass between the pituitary and pineal gland and move to the amygdala – the memory center. The impulses travel to the gustatory center where the sensation of taste is perceived.

The part of the nose responsible for odor detection called the olfactory sends impulses created by various odors to the amygdala, which also serves as the memory center of our brain for fear and trauma. The discovery that the amygdala plays a significant role in storing and releasing emotional trauma wasn’t discovered until 1989, and ONLY odor or fragrance stimulation has a profound effect in triggering a response with this gland.

The limbic system which is directly linked to those areas of the brain that controls our memory, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone balance, breathing, and stress levels can be greatly influenced by essential oils, which are able to reach the limbic system bypassing the cerebral cortex. This is important in that once inhaled, they will affect both the physiological and psychological function of the body with positive results.

“Fragrance is one of man’s greatest enjoyments, bringing back memories of past experiences and creating a feeling of security, grounding, and well-being. Dr. Joseph Ledoux, of New York Medical University, feels that this could be a major break-through in releasing emotional trauma.” The study of aromatherapy and how it relates to one’s behavior is known as aromachology.
