Essential Oils for Sore Muscles and Muscle Pain

Sore muscles often occur when the muscles are doing an activity that they are not used to or exerting more force then they are used to. Using essential oils to help relieve muscle aches and pains are a great way to boost the healing of the muscles and to get back to doing activities without it hurting. Everyone knows that sore muscles can occur when trying something new that the muscles typically aren’t used too. Especially when exercising for the first time or trying different things or a new activity the muscles have never done before. Muscle soreness can occur regardless of how much one has exercised before.

Sore muscles are a normal response and don’t last long; it’s a sign that the muscles are getting used to the new activity.


What Causes Sore Muscles?

Sore muscles happen after physical activity, known as delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS, which occurs during new exercises, increased duration or severity of the workout.

When muscles are working harder than usual or move in other ways that the muscles are not used to, it causes microscopic damage to muscle fibers, which is linked to the soreness or stiffness one might feel.

DOMS can affect anyone, even if they have been exercising for a long time. So, do not be alarmed if it happens.


How Essential Oils Help Sore Muscles

Sore muscles occur from microfiber damage and repair after 3 – 5 days, essential oils help the body repair the muscles faster. Essential oils for pain, tension, and swelling are the best for the muscles. Essential oils also help to boost the body in its healing departments to help repair what was damaged in the exercise of the muscles. Essential oils also work to calm the body and relax the pain that may have been caused by over-activity of the muscles.

Essential Oils for Sore Muscles

Eucalyptus – Well known for its cooling to help heal muscles, pain reliever, and anti-inflammatory properties to promote the healing of muscles after a workout or when the muscle’s microfibers get torn from trying something new. In addition to fighting symptoms of the cold and flu, eucalyptus also has antispasmodic, decongestant, and antibacterial properties to help protect the body from diseases.

Studies published in 2016 have proven eucalyptus’s effect on reducing pain within the muscles and dealing with the inflammatory responses when they occur.

Peppermint – Peppermint is crazy popular in the market of essential oils due to its many uses on the body from relieving headaches, stomach aches, or even reducing stress. Peppermint also boosts mental alertness and to help settle upset stomachs and curb nausea.

Peppermint contains menthol as a central component of its chemical properties, which bring about many features that include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, digestive, and stomachic properties, to name a few in this study.

Analgesic and anti-inflammatory are properties to help deal with sore muscles and pain that may be caused by the muscles and joints.

Lavender – Lavender is an excellent choice to any kit with its universal uses in acting as a jack of all trades with its properties to help relax the body and to help insomnia, reducing stress, anxiety, and improving the emotional balance of the body. Lavender has been proven in studies that show lavender to be effective at reducing pain.

Lavender is also known throughout its existence as a calming and antidepressant oil. Lavender has many uses that help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Lemongrass – Like geranium essential oil, lemongrass supports the body’s hormones and helps to stabilize and reset the body’s biological clock to overcome jet lag quickly. Lemongrass fortifies the nervous system and can be used in the bath for soothing muscular nerves and pain. Lemongrass has an outstanding reputation for keeping insects away, controlling perspiration and for treating athletics’ foot.

Lemongrass is also great at reducing inflammatory within the body to help with swelling and reducing pain felt from sprains, muscle aches, or skin inflammation, as seen in this study here.

Marjoram – Comforting in nature, marjoram essential oil can be massage during menstruation, or a great addition to a warm compress to relieve discomfort. It can also be used for treating sore and achy muscles. Marjoram has been used throughout its history as a means to alleviate swelling, spasms, sprains, and even stiffness in joints and muscles and seen in this study of marjoram’s ability when used in a test when used on participants with a history of neck pain.

Marjoram can be added to a warm or hot bath to help with the common cold and is helpful for asthma and other respiratory issues and has calming properties to help with emotions. It alleviates digestive troubles and helps with constipation and flatulence. Marjoram is terrific as a relaxant and is useful for headaches, migraines, and insomnia.

Rosemary – Rosemary helps to boost and sharpen the senses and improve memory. This essential oil is known to be a stimulant that can help increase mental focus and alertness. Rosemary has also been shown in a study to possess anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving abilities to help heal muscles that might have been damaged.

Muscle Relief Massage Blend

After a long workout, the muscles may be prone to getting sore. Using this essential oil massage blend will help heal the microfibers in the muscle for a quick recovery!

  • 25 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 2 ounces Grapeseed oil
  1. In a plastic bottle or container, add essential oils and carrier oil.

  2. Replace cap and shake well to blend.

  3. To use, apply a small amount (about a teaspoon) into your palm and massage gently into your sore muscle areas.

Sore Muscle Bath Salts Soak

Taking a bath with essential oils helps to relax the body and muscles. Inhaling the scents of the oils also helps to relax the body to help you get into that relaxed mood.

What You Need:

½ cup Fine Sea Salts (Dead Sea Salts, Himalayan Pink Salts, Epsom Salts, or a combination of these)
6 drops of Marjoram Essential Oil
4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
1 Tablespoon Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil
1 Ounce Plastic Tub

What to Do:

  1. In a small bowl, add your salts and a carrier oil, if desired. Add essential oils that you have chosen then to mix well using a wooden spoon.
  2. Add salt mixture to a small plastic tub and keep container lid tight.
  3. To use, add salts to a running bath and swish around to dissolve in the bath water. Soak for 15 minutes.

Sore No More Body Lotion Blend

Roll-ons are great for on the go soreness. Sometimes you cannot go to take a bath or bother with a message. Roll-ons are quick, easy and require no hassle.

What You Need:

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
2 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
Plastic Bottle or container

What to Do:

  1. Place your carrier oil and/or lotion in your bottle.
  2. Add essential oils starting with your base note essential oil first, followed by the middle note, then the top note essential oil.
  3. Recap and shake well to mix.
  4. Use as needed on sore muscles.

Relaxing the Soreness Roll-on Blend

Often it can be challenging to move around with sore muscles and need something to help relieve those muscles to make life working out just that little easier. Well, this is the blend for you!

What You Need:

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
3 drops Marjoram Essential Oil
2 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
2 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
Small Glass Bowl
10ml Roll-on Bottle

What to Do:

  1. In a small glass bowl, add essential oils. You can add carrier oil if the scent is too strong.
  2. Remove the ball insert of the roll-on bottle and add essential oils and carrier oil into the container.
  3. Replace ball insert and cap and shake to blend. To use, roll over affected areas.
